We've all been there before. Some of you may even be dealing with this right now. You put so much time and effort into creating great content, but can't seem to build the audience that content is geared towards. Growing a social media following (an actual following of engaged and invested people) can be difficult and sometimes feel impossible. 

I came across a short video of digital marketing guru and internet star, Gary Vaynerchuk, explaining his $1.80/day Instagram Marketing Challenge and I think it could be the key to jump-starting your engaged, invested social media following.

So, for those of you who don't know, Gary Vaynerchuk is one heck of a marketing guru. If you haven’t heard of him, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.

But what makes him so great? He would say that he got where he is today in the media marketing world by just doing. In an article I read of his lately he stated, “Done is better than perfect”. He argues that putting more time and effort into creating content and making connections that add value to potential clients and customers and less time learning the “perfect” or “best” way to make or position that content is what will ultimately lead to the desired outcome.

Adding value to clients and customers is one of the most valuable strategies when starting or working on your business. Working on relationships before working for the quick dollar is the way companies and people thrive in the business world.

A free and easy way to provide that value to people in the digital world is giving your “two cents”.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase before and it has to do with simply applying your thoughts or opinions on topics. In doing so, you show expertise and credibility but, more importantly, you add to the discussion and promote engagement.

And in the social media marketing world, engagement is king.

Which brings us to today’s topic:

The $1.80/day Instagram Marketing Challenge

A lot of the time companies and individuals have a difficult time grabbing new fans and growing their audience on instagram. Now, granted, half of the process is creating good, engaging content to begin with which I am sure we will discuss at a future date, but the other half of the equation is joining the discussion.

Chiming in to the community at large.

This part of the process is very important and vastly overlooked.

Gary Vee offers up a solution to this issue that he has coined as the $1.80/day Instagram Marketing Challenge.

The challenge works like this:

Each day, on Instagram, search popular hashtags in your industry. (If you’re a photographer, search #photography, #bokeh, etc.) Whatever your industry is, search some popular hashtags that folks in your audience or potential audience will be interested in. This may require a little research on your part.

For most hashtags Instagram will display the top 9 trending posts at the top of the feed separate from the chronological posts that pour in throughout the day.

For each of those top 9 posts, click on them, read the description, read some of the discussion comments and offer your "2 cents" on the topic.

And no, I don’t just mean type "Nice Shot!” Or “Great Photo!” Or “(Insert random emoji)”. Actually join the discussion with a thought-out, engaging question or comment.

Do this for all 9 photos and then come back throughout the day (or search for different hashtags) and complete this process 10 times.

The Math

Adding your "2 cents" to 9 different posts 10 times a day = $1.80.

Gary Vee believes if you do this daily and stay dedicated to the process, you will see growth in followers and engagement. And we aren’t talking about crappy bot followers or lame followers who just want a follow for follow. We’re talking real, engaged, and interested audience members who will bring you real value and that will stick with you along your story and journey.


The Social Media game changed a while ago. The algorithms rely on engagement and great content. Achieving both requires time, effort, and dedication to the process. In return, you have the potential to build the perfect fan base, an invested and engaged audience that wants to follow, support, and learn.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a successful business venture to me.

The Discussion

I’ll admit, I haven’t fully tried this method.

I have tried a couple days in a row and was actually surprised at how responsive others were in replying and engaging back with the comments I posted.
